90-Minute Calligraphy Art Hands-On Workshop by Artist Kumiko Hamilton

This is a hands-on Japanese calligraphy workshop for adults, but children are welcome to attend. Come and enjoy experience of calligraphy in a relaxed atmosphere!

Japanese and English are both spoken here.

Many foreigners who are not proficient in Japanese also participate.

Flow of Lesson

After practicing the letters you want to write, you will be able to make them on postcards or shikishi papers that you can display in your room or give as a gift to someone.

If you put black ink on your clothes, it might not to wash out so it would be nice if you bring an apron if you want.

Student Testimonials

Student K.I.

I gradually began to enjoy writing.

My handwriting is truly dreadful. My mother is a calligrapher and ran calligraphy classes when I was a child, but she gave up on me. So when I was invited to the workshop, I honestly joined thinking it would be fun because of Kumiko's personality. But then I was taught that it was okay to write freely, to draw whatever shapes I liked. So at first, I started writing with a half-hearted, “Oh well, it'll be terrible anyway” attitude. Yet, as I kept writing like that, I gradually began to enjoy writing characters. Once it became enjoyable, I stopped feeling tense, and I think my writing started to look somewhat presentable, even if the shapes weren't perfect. What's more, I got to take home a lovely souvenir from the workshop. Since I'd grown to enjoy writing by hand, I didn't start using a brush and inkstone, but I did begin jotting down little notes with a fountain pen. And occasionally, still using the fountain pen, I'd write things like “Iroha ni ho he to chi ri nu ru wo.”

Student T.T.

I realized I was feeling relaxed.

On my way home from Kumiko's workshop, I noticed I felt pleasantly relaxed, like after soaking in a hot spring. Maybe it suits my body. She also gives various lectures on calligraphy, satisfying my thirst for knowledge. Above all, it's free! Working in sales day in and day out makes me want to write on a whole tatami mat's worth of washi paper, so this time was healing—feeling the brush and chatting with Kumiko. (Including the final matcha and sweets.)
